The kitchen and entry way floors were covered in self-adhesive vinyl squares and while the tile looked like a quick-fix, the adhesive was determined to stay. One long night later the slab was finally exposed but an old layer of black adhesive remains.

And we found a surprise under the entry tile - real red tile, reminiscent of old McDonald's floors:

lifting the tile was a bitch; areas with less traffic were considerably more difficult to pull up. what i learned after much physical labor, wedge the putty knife underneath the tile on the corner and hammer under the tile around from one corner to the other corner. then i stood on top of the tile one top of the knife to keep weight on it and kept hammering away. 2 hours later, we pulled up the rest of about 6 square feet of kraptastic vinyl tile.
